Employee's Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement benefit scheme that's available to all salaried employees. This fund is maintained and overseen by the Employees Provident Fund Organisation of India (EPFO) and any company with over 20 employees is required by law to register with the EPFO.
It is a comprehensive Social Security Scheme designed to accomplish the task of socially protecting the 'employees' in the organized sector against the events of sickness, maternity, disablement and death due to employment injury and to provide medical care to the insured employees and their families.
Payroll refers to the process by which employees receive their salary. Functions involve balancing and reconciling payroll data and depositing and reporting taxes. The payroll department takes care of wage deductions, record keeping and verifying the reliability of pay data
Employees drawing basic salary upto Rs 6500/-  (Rs. 15000/- from 01.09.2014) have to compulsory contribute to the Provident fund and employees drawing above Rs 6501/- ( (Rs. 15001/- from 01.09.2014)) have an option to become member of the Provident Fund.
